A bunion is a deformity of the (big) great toe. The medical term for a foot bunion is hallux valgus. A bunion is a great toe that points at a sideways angle towards your second toe. There is also a characteristic bump on the inner side of the foot. As the bunion becomes more prominent, bunion pain can develop.
The Gait cycle causes a collapsed forefoot arch;calcium builds-up around metatarsal head because of excessive weight distribution and pressure during toe-off, Inward torsion, (the lower leg, knee and thigh all rotate internally (medially), Over pronation; increases the stresses on the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the foot, lower leg including shin and knee as the limb rotates in too far. Causes include, walking and running gait,footwear injury, leg length discrepancy, high heels are thought to be a major contributor. Symptoms include; pain and calluses around 1st metatarsal head and great toe,skin Irritation and calcium build-up around 1st metatarsal head, Great toe cross-aligned and twisted, Forefoot appears wider than normal.
